What is Auto Insurance?

Auto insurance provides financial protection against physical damage and/or bodily injury resulting from traffic collisions and against liability that could also arise therefrom. 

Auto insurance may also offers financial protection against theft of the vehicle and damage to the vehicle, sustained from things other than traffic collisions.
Minimum Car Insurance Requirements 
State minimum insurance requirements are the car insurance requirements for each state, by law, for their residents. These minimum requirements for each state can be found at the state insurance commissioner's website, and we have also included them here for the state's we're licensed in for your easy reference.

  • $10,000 property damage liability per accident
  • $10,000 personal injury protection
Michigan
  • $50,000 bodily injury liability per person
  • $100,000 bodily injury liability per accident
  • $10,000 property damage in another state
  • $250,000 personal injury protection (lower options or opt-out available for Medicare and Medicaid enrollees)
New York
  • $25,000 bodily injury liability per person
  • $50,000 bodily injury liability per accident
  • $50,000 liability for death per person
  • $100,000 liability for death per accident
  • $10,000 property damage liability per accident
  • $50,000 personal injury protection
  • $25,000 uninsured motorist coverage per person

What is a lien holder?

A lien holder is someone who has either leased a vehicle to you with an insurable interest, or given you money on loan to buy it. The lien holder is usually a bank or another financial firm. When insuring your car, the lien holder is also included on your policy.

Auto Insurance Coverage

There are basically six different types of coverage. Some may be required by law. Others are optional. They are:
  • Bodily injury liability - for injuries the policyholder causes to someone else.
  • Medical payments or Personal Injury Protection (PIP) - for treatment of injuries to the driver and passengers of the policyholder’s car.
  • Property damage liability - for damage the policyholder causes to someone else’s property.
  • Collision - for damage to the policyholder’s car from a collision.
  • Comprehensive - for damage to the policyholder’s car not involving a collision with another car (including windshield damage or damage from fire, explosions, earthquakes, floods, and riots), and theft.
  • Uninsured motorists coverage - for costs resulting from an accident involving a hit-and-run driver or a driver who does not have insurance.
