Individual dwellings and commercial projects under major renovation or new build need special insurance to ensure they are properly covered during construction. Many think their home insurance or business property insurance will cover them or their general contractor's insurance is enough. This is simply not the case. Relying on these policies leaves owners with significant holes in their coverage that can lead to unexpected cash outlays. The homeowners policy, for example, is designed to insure an owner-occupied home because of this, there's a chance a carrier could categorize a detached structure under renovation as unoccupied.
